Captain EO
Captain EO, Michael’s excellent 3D adventure film, premiered at Epcot and Disneyland in 1986, and at Tokyo Disneyland in 1987. The film-based attraction stars Michael as Captain EO, a fledging space pilot who is charged with bringing the gift of music to the dark and mysterious Supreme Leader, played by Anjelica Houston; it was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and executive produced by George Lucas in association with Walt Disney Imagineering and Industrial Light & Magic.
Captain EO was closed in 1996 to make way for a different attraction, but soon after Michael’s death, fans began a series of campaigns to have it re-instated. Disney obliged, and the film re-opened at the Orlando, Paris and Tokyo sites for a limited engagement, and called it ‘Captain EO tribute.’
The film reopened in Tokyo on July 1, 2010. Originally set to be a run through the holidays, the attraction was continually granted extensions until the decision was made in Summer 2011, to let the attraction remain a permanent feature of Tokyo Disneyland.
No announcements have been made by the other three sites, but no closure date has been announced either.
