Michael’s Songs With An Afrobeat
September 8, 2009
The Time-Based Art Festival was closed by a ninety minute tribute to Michael with a difference. Ben Darwish, a Portland (USA) pianist led a ten piece band performing Michael’s classic hit songs in an Afrobeat style and incorporating elements from West African highlife, jazz and the Afro-centric side of James Brown’s powerhouse funk.
A brass version of the signature string riff from Michael’s ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’ began the set. ‘Billie Jean’ and the softer ‘Rock With You’ were also featured, as was a very fast version of ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’.
The dancefloor was packed for the entire set with people of all ages dancing up a storm.
